The U. S. Food and Drug Administration has warned consumers to avoid receiving erectile dysfunction medication, and has also warned users to stop using the drug when it is prescribed for erectile dysfunction.
In a letter to its consumer agency, FDA said it was aware of several instances of misuse of erectile dysfunction drugs, but declined to provide details.
The agency said the agency’s warning label and warning about the potential for misuse were not comprehensive and contained information about the possible dangers of taking too much or too little. However, FDA did not give specific details about the possible dangers of taking Viagra or other medications.
“Consumers should be aware that taking too much or too little Viagra, when taken for personal or medical reasons, can lead to serious adverse effects, including heart failure, stroke, and other cardiovascular issues,” FDA said.
“Consumers should be aware that Viagra and other drugs that contain sildenafil may interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs, including nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate, and isosorbide mononitrate. These drugs should not be taken if the individual has a heart condition, high blood pressure, or high levels of potassium in their blood,” the letter added.
The letter also said the FDA “has not identified any other potential risks associated with the use of these drugs,” but did not address whether these drugs should be prescribed for those who have heart conditions.
In a letter to the agency, the FDA said it had identified a few cases in which patients taking certain other drugs used sildenafil to treat chest pain. One of these cases involved a patient who had been taking nitrates for chest pain for several years, but the patient stopped taking them after a few days. In these cases, the patient had taken Viagra for an extended period of time, and then the medication became ineffective.
“These cases demonstrate the potential for serious adverse effects from the use of sildenafil in individuals who have been prescribed nitrates or are taking certain other drugs to treat chest pain,” FDA said.
“Patients should seek medical attention right away if they experience chest pain, sudden vision loss, hearing loss, dizziness, chest pain, unexplained fatigue, shortness of breath or swelling in their legs, weakness, numbness, or tingling in their arms or hands, confusion, trouble concentrating, agitation, irritability, hallucinations, coma, or death.”
In a letter to the FDA, the agency also said that it was aware of reports of “sudden, severe, life-threatening allergic reactions” that occurred after the use of sildenafil in patients with heart conditions.
“This finding is of particular concern to patients who have been taking sildenafil for a prolonged period of time or have had heart attacks, strokes, or other heart conditions,” FDA said.
“While the potential for serious adverse reactions from sildenafil in patients who have had heart disease or are taking certain other drugs to treat chest pain is a possibility, patients should seek medical attention right away if they experience any unusual symptoms,” the letter added.
The FDA did not respond to requests for comment from those who represent people who have been prescribed nitrates or other drugs to treat chest pain.The FDA has been conducting studies on nitroglycerin for the past five years. In 2011, the FDA began to label the drug sildenafil as a “prescription drug.”In 2016, the FDA announced it was recommending that users of nitrates take tamsulosin, the brand name for the drug.
In a letter to its consumer agency, the agency said it was aware of several cases of people taking tamsulosin and found that they were taking it more often, had higher heart-to-heart heart rate and were more likely to get cardiac arrest.
“The FDA’s warning label is inadequate and does not provide sufficient information to warrant the use of tamsulosin. Therefore, the FDA has determined that the use of tamsulosin is not appropriate for the condition being treated,” the letter said.
The FDA also noted that there was an “unexplained increased risk of cardiac arrest” after the use of sildenafil.“This is not a case in which the FDA has determined that the use of tamsulosin in individuals taking nitrates for chest pain is inappropriate,” the letter said.
